The Library

The library is a large room divided into fiction and non-fiction. The former is a combination of Hespa's own works and an ever-growing list of published dragon books, while the latter is a smaller collection of information and resources about the same.

Nailed to the back wall is a large pinboard (how the nail was driven into a brick wall is something you are encouraged not to think about).  Across the top are the words MODERN DRAGON SIGHTINGS.

Tucked into one of the the Fiction shelves is a small patch of sparkling air, a portal, to take you to the work of other alt.fan.dragons storytellers, while beyond Hespa's own work are several shelves of published dragon fiction...

Being a dragon herself, many of Hespa's own tales and poems are about dragons, but not all of them. There is one long shelf of books bound in a strange blue-grey hide, and another slightly shorter one of hide-covered tubes containing tightly curled poem scrolls. The closest books and scrolls to you appear to be the oldest (and by inference, the ones furthest away are probably the best).  Go on, pick one up. Read the title or the label, then turn over the book or check the back of the label for a short blurb. See something interesting? Sure, go ahead, read it!

 The Books

The First Stargazer
(Word doc) (text)
A story I wrote a long time ago, when trying to develop the dragon-inhabited world of Fraenaror, which is constantly light and hot on one side and dark and cold on the other, due to the planet not rotating (to understand several of the names in this tale, have a look at my list of 'dragon' in other languages). It's a bit rough.

Wolf's Daughter
(Word doc) (text)
A family of wolves have a daughter who is... not quite right. This one won a school writing competition in Year 8. I think it would have been better if it could have been longer, but there was a word limit, and I was only just inside it.

The Dragon of the Stars
(Word doc) (text)
A vast ephemeral dragon travels through the universe, observing time and great change. Have you ever woken up before you have to get up, and just lain in bed while thoughts run through your head? This tale arrived in my brain during one such lie-in. It recieved an honorable mention in the same competition as Wolf's Daughter (Year 9 this time).

The Ring
(Word doc) (text)
A girl's mother goes missing in very mysterious circumstances. This one was a Year 8 project, and I only realised after I had finished just how creepy it is - one for the X-files here...

To Be A Rider
(Word doc) (text)
A young Gessiki (like an intelligent raptor) runs away to join the dragon-herders. A year 9 English project, supposedly the start of a new world, but sadly no more stories have come from it.

Skip
(Word doc) (text)
What would you do if your natural reaction to danger was to inadvertantly displace space and time... and you couldn't control it? This tale started as a "What if...", but the concept is very hard to explain, as my character discovers. My apologies if it's a bit complicated...

How the Moon and the Stars Became
(Word doc) (text)
The title says it all. This was a task for Emma in year 8, to write an aboriginal-style legend.

A Cunning Plan
(Word doc) (text)
An alien civilisation finds the perfect way to colonise Earth. I only realisied after I wrote it how closely it relates to a Douglas Adams idea (remember Ford Prefect?).

Game Over
(Word doc) (text)
Not quite reincarnation, but certainly not the afterlife. This is more a small flight of fancy than a proper story with a plot. I can't help wondering though - what would level 5 (and beyond) be like?

First Snow
(Word doc) (text)
Originally the beginning of a much longer tale, which was never finished, but I decided it would sit fairly well as a story in its own right.

Lady of the House
A young woman whose work is literally her life. A somewhat melancholy tale, slightly similar to Anne McCaffery's brainship idea.  Another winner of the school writing competition, year 11 this time.
Sadly, I have to remove Lady of the House from this page... due to its being published!!  It recently came third in the Judah Waten National Writing Competition, and along with all the other winning stories, it has been published in a book called (surprise surprise) 'Judah Waten Winning Stories'.  Available in libraries throughout Victoria, and presumably the rest of Australia, although I don't know if it's likely to go overseas.  Since I don't get anything from the sale of the books anyway, if you would really like to read Lady of the House, drop me a line and I'll be happy to email it to you.

Cerion and Tagonie
(Word doc) (text)
This was a Literature work requirement for Emma, to rewrite the central debate of the play 'Antigone' in a different setting.  Of course, with my influence, it became a very different setting, with dragons as the central characters.

Supercon
(Word doc) (text)
A pretty cynical take on the classic superhero.  The seed of an idea which has since evolved, will (with a lot of luck) work its way into a longer piece.

Infiltration
(Word doc) (text)
This is actuially the same story as A Cunning Plan, but rewritten with the benefit of a couple more years' experience.  The different is amazing, in my humble opinion...

The Bunyip of the Billabong
(Word doc) (text)
Another Lit project, this time to write a story in the style of Henry Lawson (a famous Australian writer).  Very different to my usual work!

Creation
(Word doc) (text)
What happens when the creation becomes the creator?  Another school writing comp winner, Year 12 this (final) time.

On the House
(Word doc) (text)
OK, so I had to write a ghost story for a project.  Definitely not my medium, but I wrote it, so here it is, for all that it's cliched and predictable...

Dream from a Mundane World
(Word doc) (text)
In a word, dark.  This is based fairly closely on a dream I actually had, and it scared the bejeezus out of me.  I did my best to translate that fear into the text, but it didn't work as well as I'd hoped.  Ah well - maybe you had to be there...

First Contact
(Word doc) (text)
An alien race arrives on Earth, determined to make a good impression.  Probably the closest I've gotten (so far) to Pratchett-style humour.

Outside the Music
(Word doc) (text)
My second 'straight' (no fantasy or sci-fi) story, after 'Bunyip'.  An assignment for first year university Creative Writing - to explore a teenager's private space.  I wrote the lyrics, too (apart from the obvious ones!), and had a lot of fun with them - must try more lyric-writing...

To Sleep, Perchance To Dream
(Word doc) (text)
My major piece for first year Creative Writing at uni - unfortunately, the concept turned out to need more words than the word-limit allowed for, forcing me to leave out some moderately important character building (believe it or not, I had a whole back-story worked out for Kris, and a fair bit for Jack too). My apologies also if it seems rushed - it was. I don't like writing to a time limit, I really don't.

Changes
(Word doc) (text)
My first furry story, published in South Fur Lands #23 (where it was titled 'Udole' due to a mix-up with the file name), but I'm fairly sure I still have permission to put it here.  A look at the darker side of furry - if all the animals, or even just all the mammals on a world are intelligent and anthropomorphic, what do the carnivores eat?  Incidentally, Udole is the Swahili word for an animal's claw, while Shingo Refu translates as 'long neck'.

The Scrolls

The Dragon Wakes or One, Two, Three, Four
(Word doc) (text)
As the title suggests, a red dragon wakes up.

Song of the Earth
(Word doc) (text)
Our planet (well, Emma's and probably yours) tells its own story. A poem written for school in Year 8, in two parts.

The collected works of A. Dragon
(Word doc) (text)
Three (so far) very simple poems written by a large but illiterate dragon. I have to admit that they were a bit of silliness and took absolutely no hard thought, but they're kinda cute.

Gently, Gently
(Word doc) (text)
Written from the point of view of a dragon - an ode to foolishness.

Where be the Dragons?
(Word doc) (text)
A slightly wistful poem written in back in Year 8, when the inner draconity was only just emerging, which I recently rediscovered.

Poetry
(Word doc) (text)
The reason for this sudden influx of poetry is an English work requirement - a poetry folio. Suddenly having to write a lot of poems at once was the inspiration for this one, which doesn't even resemble a poem unless you say it just right.

The Sonnet
(Word doc) (text)
As the title suggests, a sonnet. In fact, a sonnet about writing a sonnet. How silly can you get?

Chaos Blooms Alphabetically
(Word doc) (text)
Yes, this is just as strange as the name sounds. An interesting idea which produced very odd fruit.

The Song of the Seagull
(Word doc) (text)
Written at Wilsons Promentary (for non-Australians and possibly some non-Victorians, that's a national park, the little pointy bit at the bottom next to Port Phillip Bay), in defense of seagulls.

The Non-Fiction section is much less organised than the other, its shelves randomly littered with scrolls and books, many only partly-filled, and various scrawled post-its. You can pick up some good bits of information from them, though, if you know where to look. The most complete scroll bears the title: A World of Dragons

To one side is a pile of non-fiction books on dragons from other authors, the titles prominant on their spines:

A Diversity of Dragons, by Anne McCaffery with Richard Woods

The Book of the Dragon, by Judy Allen & Jeanne Griffiths

A Natural History; Dragons and Unicorns, by Paul and Karin Johnsgard

Dragons of China, by Ida Chionh

Dragons; An Anthology of Verse and Prose

Dragons Gods & Spirits from Chinese Mythology, by Tao Tao Liu Sanders
